Master of Science "Digital Reality"

To take a look at my master's degree we turn to the cold yet beautiful northern city of Hamburg. While my bachelor's degree provided me with a foundational education, the master's program aims to deepen my knowledge and explore new subfields that pique my interest.

In addition to my academic pursuits, Hamburg has allowed me to discover more about myself and the interests I wish to pursue in life. Consequently, each project I undertake becomes a reflection of my passions (and the guidance of our lecturers). I have the wonderful privilege of having pursued my Master's in Digital Reality at HAW Hamburg — let me introduce you to a few of these projects.

Master's Thesis

AnimVRig 2.0

VR animation through real-time body tracking

This thesis investigates the development of a VR animation tool in Unity, utilizing real-time body tracking to dynamically adapt rigged objects to user movements. The prototype, AnimVRig Version 2.0, integrates the Unity Movement Package and GameObjectRecorder, offering a flexible and accessible solution for real-time animation customization within the Unity engine, suitable for both experienced developers and beginners.

AnimVRig 1.0

A hybrid Unity plugin for animation in editor and VR

At the time, my most ambitious project, shaped during the 'Project 2' course: a hybrid application called AnimVRig (AVR) tailored for developers. It empowers developers to dynamically modify animations within the Unity editor in real time and refine the animation process in virtual reality — for humanoid and non-humanoid models alike. The plugin generates a new rig based on the specified bone structure, without the steep learning curve associated with tools like Blender.

Japan Quest

Learning Hiragana in a mini open world

In the 'Advanced Programming' course I delved further into the intricacies of the Hurricane VR Toolkit, explored animations in Unity and engaged with sophisticated programming structures resembling a quest system — while integrating my personal journey of learning the Hiragana alphabet into a VR e-learning environment. Thus, the concept for the mini-open-world game 'Japan Quest' was born.

3D-Modeling — Cyber Hydra

A metallic mythical beast, modeled in Blender

One of my initial modules aimed at creating a random model using Blender and adding a short animation to it. With a profound fascination for snakes, I chose one of my favorite mythical beings, the Hydra — in a cyber style with a metallic appearance. The real challenge lay in grappling with Blender's steep learning curve: programming is one thing, but modeling is an entirely different realm.

Haunted Asylum

Virtual Acoustics — horror lives in spatial audio

A simulation or game is much more than the sum of its parts. Have you ever watched a horror film on mute? Likely not — without the spine-chilling audio, the experience would be reduced to nothing more than mediocre acting. This realization fueled my anticipation for the 'Virtual Acoustics' course, providing a unique opportunity to delve into the realm of VR audio in Unity.

Unity DOTS, Godot & Unreal Engine

Three engines, three two-week challenges

In three distinct two-week projects, my colleague and I took on the challenge as part of the 'Game Engines' module to explore different game engines: a Unity project based on Unity's data-oriented technology stack (DOTS), a multiplayer Snake reimagined in Unreal Engine, and a PacMan-style pathfinding project in the Godot Engine.

A mythical-inspired multiplayer card game

A mythical-inspired multiplayer card game based on Unity's multiplayer system — including Lobby & Relay, Cloudsave, Crossplay, a Deck Editor, A.I. images and a Singleplayer mode for Windows, iOS and Android.

And what came next?

After the master, academic projects turned into real research work: XR training at Hochschule Karlsruhe.
